Diakonia Council of Churches is deeply concerned by the current state of affairs at the eThekwini Municipality, which will adversely affect service delivery in the greater Durban areas.
Last week’s resignation, then withdrawal of Cllr Zandile Gumede’s resignation as eThekwini Mayor together with the postponement of the swearing in ceremony of Mayor-elect Mr Mxolisi Kaunda has left us as citizens, reeling. As people of faith in the province we look forward to an end to the confusion and appeal to the powers that be to fast track their deliberations as the confusion over the leadership in the municipality has affected eThekwini people for far too long.
As a civil society organisation, our call is for the leadership in the province and country to ensure full Council meetings continue soon so high level service delivery decisions can be made without any further delay. As the governing party meets to deal with this crisis today, we hope and pray that an amicable resolution will be reached that will be in the best interest of the eThekwini people. It is a new season and we pray for God’s guidance so we as a province will see a new beginning of hope, healing and growth which we so desperately need for our province and the municipality in particular.
