Economic Justice
The programme aims at building the capacity to understand and claim socio-economic rights for the poor, promoting economic literacy, and access to services, as well as raising awareness of global and macroeconomic links to our economy. It enables local churches to engage in meaningful economic transformation within the eThekwini municipal area.

Economic Justice Course - The annual economic justice course serve as a basis for promoting economic literacy. The course covers areas such as globalisation, economic systems and economic alternatives. The course includes theological reflections based on The Oikos Journey.

Training of facilitators - The training enables economic justice course beneficiaries to organise and facilitate community-based economic literacy workshops in their communities.

The Oikos Journey - This is a theological reflection on the economic crisis in South Africa. The booklet highlights that though we have a constitutional democracy, South Africa still has one of the greatest gaps between the rich and the poor in the world.

The Kairos Document, published in September 1985 challenging injustice in the apartheid system as well as in the church, inspired the rise of The Oikos Journey in light of our current economic crisis. It challenges churches to question the root causes of our economic inequalities. The booklet has been translated into German and isiZulu and it is accessible online. To download, click here
Civil Society Budget Watch – Over the years Diakonia Council of Churches has been working with other organisations such as, Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), Democracy Development Programme, Abahlali and Mariannridge Coordinating Committee to monitor the eThekwini municipal Budget.
